When Kelcee asked me to photograph her home-birth I cried. The request alone was an honor that immediately impacted me in a powerful way as I knew this was a task not to be taken lightly. I had dreamt of photographing a home birth but hadn’t yet had the opportunity and the timing of this just perfectly right.

After months of preparation, excited conversations, and regular text updates after midwife appointments I was on official standby. I received the call one evening while preparing dinner and before quickly heading her way I made last minute arrangements with my own family. When I arrived to their cozy home across town I’m not sure what I was expecting, but I entered a space of calmness, control and love. Kelcee patiently waited for her husband and son to fill the birth pool, embracing each wave of contractions with strength and grace. Big brother flitted excitedly through their home, checking on his mama regularly with a small expression of worry at times. It soon became clear that this baby was not going to wait for the pool to be filled, and with the support and coaching of her partner, doula and midwife, Kelcee bravely welcomed her baby girl into this world in only a few short moments. Time seemed to stand still as everyone present were filled with awe for this fresh life, shock at how quickly things had progressed, and admiration for the mama who completely trusted herself to deliver her baby in the safety and familiarity of their own home. The emotional expression on this mother’s face as she held her new baby looked at her husband proudly standing above her is one I will never forget.

On my way home several hours later I replayed the events of that evening, full of gratitude for having the opportunity to witness and document the power of this incredible woman along with the expertise and skill of her trusted birth team. Truly an unforgettable night.
